When the USS Maine was sunk in Havana Harbor, it precipitated the Spanish American War of 1898. Teddy instantly joined the effort and enlisted with the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, which later became known as Roosevelt's Rough Riders. The Rough Riders won the war, and Teddy was a hero, winning the Medal of Honor for his efforts. The Rough Riders were a patriotic group, consisting of seasoned ranch hands, cowboys, policemen, East Coast polo players, Ivy Leaguers, and American Indians!! A broad cross-section of Americans.
